چکیده

Abstract. In this paper, we propose a general framework for designing numerical schemes that have both well-balanced (WB) and asymptotic preserving (AP) properties, for various kinds of kinetic models. We are interested in two different parameter regimes, 1) When the ratio between the mean free path and the characteristic macroscopic length ε tends to zero, the density can be described by (advection) diffusion type (linear or nonlinear) macroscopic models; 2) When ε = O(1), the models behave like hyperbolic equations with source terms and we are interested in their steady states. We apply the framework to three different kinetic models: neutron transport equation and its diffusion limit, the transport equation for chemotaxis and its Keller-Segel limit, and grey radiative transfer equation and its nonlinear diffusion limit. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the properties of the schemes.

BPS: a Format-Preserving Encryption Proposal

In recent months, attacks on servers of payment processors have led to the disclosure of tens of millions of credit card numbers (also known as Personal Account Numbers, PANs). As an answer, end-to-end encryption has been advocated and an encryption standard that preserves the format of the data would be welcome. More generally, a format-preserving encryption scheme would be welcomed for many r...

Variance Reduction in Simulationsof Loss

We propose a new estimator of steady-state blocking probabilities for simulations of stochastic loss models that can be much more e cient than the natural estimator (ratio of losses to arrivals). The proposed estimator is a convex combination of the natural estimator and an indirect estimator based on the average number of customers in service, obtained from Little's law (L = W ), which exploit...

Numerical High-Field Limits in Two-Stream Kinetic Models and 1D Aggregation Equations

Numerical resolution of two-stream kinetic models in strong aggregative setting is considered. To illustrate our approach, we consider an 1D kinetic model for chemotaxis in hydrodynamic scaling and the high field limit of the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system. A difficulty is that, in this aggregative setting, weak solutions of the limiting model blow up in finite time, therefore the scheme s...

On the Average Height of b-Balanced Ordered Trees

An ordered tree with height h is b-balanced if all its leaves have a level l with h − b <= l <= h, where at least one leaf has a level equal to h − b. For large n, we shall compute asymptotic equivalents to the number of all b-balanced ordered trees with n nodes and of all such trees with height h. Furthermore, assuming that all b-balanced ordered trees with n nodes are equally likely, we shall...

Maxwellian Decay for Well-balanced Approximations of a Super-characteristic Chemotaxis Model

We focus on the numerical simulation of a one-dimensional model of chemotaxis dynamics (proposed by Greenberg and Alt [22]) in a bounded domain by means of a previously introduced well-balanced (WB) and asymptotic-preserving (AP) scheme [16]. We are especially interested in studying the decay onto numerical steady-states for two reasons: 1/ conventional upwind schemes have been shown to stabili...
